The Clarkson City Commission on Tuesday authorized Girl Scout Troop No. 905 to install blessing and little library boxes in the city park.
Trisha Polston, representing the Girl Scout troop, said the boxes are part of Troop No. 905’s Bronze award project and will operate on a “take what you need, leave what you can” basis. However, Polston said the troop intends to add items to them weekly and will also maintain the boxes.
“I think it’s a wonderful idea,” said City Commissioner Joyce Bell.
Commissioner Rick Hussel suggested installing the boxes near the playground in the city park to ensure they are under security camera surveillance, and the commission came to a consensus that this would be the best location for them.
Commissioner Michael Anderson said he supported them as well, provided the commission could have the right to remove them immediately if needed. City Commissioner Ed Schott explained that there was an instance recently where a community box had been used by drug dealers to communicate.
After discussion, the city commission voted to authorize the Girl Scouts to install the blessing and library boxes in the Clarkson City Park.
Additionally, the commission authorized the Girl Scouts to decorate ornaments for attendees of this year’s Clarkson Christmas in the Park event, which will be held on Friday, Dec. 6.
According to City Clerk Scotty Gore, the lights in Christmas in the Park will be on from Dec. 6 through New Year’s.
